“I wish I would have learned to play the guitar.”

This is what I hear most when I tell people I am a musician and the one thing I cannot understand in the slightest. Music is a journey that can start at any age or any stage in life.

As you can imagine, I hear this most often when talking with adults. I hear they have  always wanted to learn how to play the guitar/piano/drums, etc. My response is always, “Why don’t you start now?” *Crickets*  I get it, people are busy, they don’t know where to start, they are afraid of commitment. Whatever the reason, I am often reminded of what my own children would say in this situation, “If you never try, you never know.”

So when you find yourself saying, “I wish I would have learned to play (fill in the blank)”, know that it is never too late to start. Music is a journey not a destination.  With music you are constantly discovering, learning and growing. To start this journey, find a local studio musician, set up private lessons and begin to stretch your musical capabilities. If you never try, you never know.
